40 Day Miracle – Surrender TEMPTATIONS

Posted by rise2it on June 14, 2012

There are a couple of verses that I am immediately drawn to when I think of temptations.

The first being 1 Co 10:13, “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”

The second would be Mt 6:13 when Jesus teaches us how to pray, “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”

Rick Warren has taught us in Purpose Driven Life,  “Temptation begins by capturing your attention.  What gets your attention arouses your emotions.  Then your emotions activate your behaviour, and you act on what you felt.  The more you focus on “I don’t want this,” the stronger it draws you into its web.” I recommend reading chapters 26 & 27 in the book to grasp the meaning of temptation and how to defeat it.

Three steps to defeat temptation from Guideposts are:

  1. Know your dangers.  Think about your own temptations. Where are you tempted? When? With whom? Why? The more you understand the situations that cause you to fall, the easier it is to work around them. “A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it” (Proverbs 22:3).
  2. Pray.  Even if you can’t see a way to resist temptation, God can. Jesus was “tempted in every way, just as we are — yet was without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). What better resource is there than the One who overcame temptation? Ask him to show you the path around your weaknesses.
  3. Plan your detour.  Find a replacement thought pattern. Instead of thinking about buying yet another Christmas present for your children or spouse, focus on how you can spend that money on the poor. Yearning for chocolate cake? Imagine the taste of a gorgeous, crisp, colorful apple instead. Direct your attention to that uplifting book on your nightstand instead of to surfing the Internet. Choose where your treasure is, then focus on it. And “there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).

“Run from anything that stimulates youthful lust. Follow anything that makes you want to do right. Pursue faith and love and peace, and enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.” (2 Ti 2:22)

Trust in the LORD and He will bring you through any temptation!

A Place at the Table – Day 7

RESIST TEMPTATION:

  1. to withstand, strive against, or oppose enticement or allurement.
  2. to withstand the action or effect of enticement or allurement.
  3. to refrain or abstain from, especially with difficulty or reluctance to evil.

Yesterday was a day that temptation got the best of me.  I gave into my sinful desires and I over indulged.

I am so thankful that my God is a forgiving God.  He will forgive me a sinner, but He will still judge my sin.
